What is NIT?
Notice Inviting Tender
An NIT (Notice Inviting Tender) is the official announcement of a tender, giving the work, key dates, fees, EMD and who is eligible to bid.
What is an NIT?
A Notice Inviting Tender is the public notice a government buyer issues to invite bids. It is the first document a bidder sees, and it tells you in short form what is being bought and how to take part.
It may be published in newspapers, on the buyer’s website and on e-procurement portals such as CPPP or state portals. The full tender document, with specifications and contract terms, usually comes with the NIT or is linked from it.
What an NIT contains
- Tender reference number and name of the buyer
- Name and short description of the work, supply or service
- Estimated cost or value, if disclosed
- EMD amount and tender fee
- Eligibility criteria in brief
- Dates for document download, pre-bid meeting, bid submission and bid opening
- Completion or delivery period
- Where to get the tender documents and how to submit bids
Tips for bidders
Read the NIT first to decide quickly whether a tender is worth your time. But do not rely on the NIT alone; the detailed tender document may have stricter or more specific conditions.
Note every date, and keep checking for corrigenda, which can change them.
