What is Bar bending schedule?
BBS
A bar bending schedule (BBS) lists every reinforcement bar in a concrete structure, with its diameter, shape, length, number and weight.
What is a bar bending schedule?
A bar bending schedule, or BBS, is a table prepared from the structural drawings that sets out each type of steel reinforcement bar needed for a reinforced concrete element, such as a footing, column, beam or slab.
It tells the site team how to cut and bend the bars, and gives the total weight of steel, which is how reinforcement is usually measured and paid for.
What it contains
A BBS is commonly prepared following Indian Standard IS 2502 and usually includes:
- Bar mark and the structural member it belongs to
- Bar diameter and shape, often with a sketch
- Number of bars and cutting length of each
- Total length and weight, by diameter
Tips for bidders
At tender stage, a rough BBS from the drawings helps you check the steel quantity in the BOQ, as steel is often one of the largest cost items in RCC work.
After award, many contracts require the BBS to be submitted to the engineer for approval before bars are cut. Keep it consistent with the latest drawings, as it is often used to check steel quantities in your bills.
Common questions
Common questions about Bar bending schedule in government tenders.
The contractor or the structural designer usually prepares it from the reinforcement drawings, and the engineer checks it. Contracts differ, so check the tender conditions.
It is rarely part of the bid itself. It is more often needed during execution, for cutting, approval and measurement of steel.
